Duncan Chilvers

Technical Director

Duncan is the Co-founder and Technical Director of NDLA, after gaining experience from multiple practices whilst completing his studies. Duncan provides a wealth of experience in detailed landscape design and technical aspects of the design process.

Duncan studied Landscape Architecture at Birmingham City University, where he subsequently completed his BA and MA. He has been involved in all manner of projects, from residential, education and commercial sectors, public realm, and private garden spaces. Whilst studying, Duncan was involved in the IFLA Student Charrette, as part of the UK team in Turin and was also part of the design team for a show garden for the BBC Gardeners’ World Flower Show.

Duncan’s technical and digital skills have been vital during previous community engagement programs, ranging from production of 3D flythroughs and models to VR models which members of the public can more actively engage with. During COVID he developed a way for people to access the VR models from home and even walk around projects as you would on Google maps.

His range of skills include producing new ways to interpret and share design information, as well as provide the detail on how to build elements. This has brought new dimensions and ways for our clients to engage with communities, promote their projects, and share their aspirations and ethos. This expertise allowed us to expand upon in person only engagement events, finding that expanding to online activities, we can engage a much wider spectrum of the community and those less able.

Duncan’s key specialisms include:

  • Production of CAD work, which includes Master planning, Hard works, Construction Details, Planting Plans, Specifications and Schedules.
  • Production of 3D work, Lumion Visuals and Cut and Fill Calculations.
